Communist rebels detonated two landmines while a military vehicle was passing by in Barangay Nago-ocan in Katubig, Northern Samar, killing one soldier and injuring 10 others last Tuesday (March 13).
Reports said the rebels detonated a roadside bomb while the vehicle of the troops from the 34th Infantry Battalion passed by. Officials refused to identify the slain soldier except to say he’s a sergeant.
Thereafter, a one-hour firefight ensued.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Niceforo Diaz of the 8th Infantry Division, the wounded soldiers were already airlifted to the nearest hospital.
