On an October day that appeared like any other day in Surigao del Norte, in one town where mining became the major industry, several communist insurgents amassed and prepared themselves for an attack.
The targets, a rather ambitious one, were the Taganito Mining Corp., the Platinum Group Mining Corp. and the Taganito High-Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL) Corporation, all in the town of Claver.
As the clock struck 9 a.m., the insurgents, wearing military fatigues, simultaneously made their way into the mining sites.
The first group of rebels went to Taganito Mining Corporation in Barangay Taganito, disarming all the security guards who offered little resistance. They later burned the firm’s guesthouse and seized a total of 32 9mm pistols from the guards.
