ANTIQUE, Philippines—Antique was rocked by a 4.9 magnitude earthquake on or about 1:53 a.m. today. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) revealed that the quake is of tectonic origin, 6-kilometer northeast of Valderrama and 11-kilometer deep.
Quakes of tectonic origin are brought about by plates in the lithosphere bumping against each other due to certain activities underneath the earth.
The earthquake recorded Intensity III in Calinog, Iloilo, Intensity IV in the towns of Sibalom and San Jose de Buenavista, Antique, and Intensity V in Valderrama, Antique.
There were no casualties and property damage recorded resulting from the earthquake, although affected areas may expect aftershocks from time to time.
According to Phivolcs, Intensity III is commonly weak but nonetheless felt by people, especially those located on the upper floors of buildings. Vibrations are characterized by the “passing of a light truck” that may trigger the movement of hanging objects and of still water in a container. As a result, people may suffer from dizziness and nausea.
Intensity IV is moderately strong that vibrations are felt indoors and outdoors like the “passing of a heavy truck.” Rumbling sounds may also go along with the rattling of glassware, creaking of floors and walls, swinging of hanging objects, and oscillation of still water.
Intensity V is strong that shaking and rocking may prompt people to go outdoors. Hanging objects may swing violently and kitchenware may end up clattering and clinking. People may notice movement of leaves and twigs, too.
