Two were killed and three were wounded as suspected New People’s Army (NPA) rebels attacked the Alegria Municipal Police Station in Surigao del Norte Thursday afternoon, military reports said.
According to reports, the incident transpired at 3 p.m. when a band of around 60 NPA rebels on board a red Isuzu Forward truck attacked the police station. Two policemen were wounded in the firefight.
The attack, which lasted for about 30 minutes, alerted the police in Kitcharao as the rebels retreated toward the villages of Siringan and Bliss.
Police reinforcements came to the rescue of their colleagues only to encounter the fleeing rebels, resulting in another firefight that killed two rebels armed with AK-47 rifles.
A nearby Army detachment then sent reinforcements, but the soldiers encountered a blocking force of 15 rebels in Barangay Pungtod, resulting in another firefight that wounded one Army soldier.
