Metro Manila and nearby provinces have experienced heavy flooding caused by strong rains brought by the southwest monsoon and Tropical Storm (TS) MARIO (Fung-Wong) Friday, September 19.
The combined effect of the southwest monsoon and Tropical Storm MARIO has brought moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms in Metro Manila and other areas in Luzon. The heavy rains have caused flash floods in several areas.
Classes and work in government offices in Metro Manila and other affected areas were suspended. Also, flights in and out of Metro Manila were redirected and canceled. The Philippine Stock Exchange has also been suspended today. Several companies also advised its employees to stay home.
According to the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), over 51,000 individuals are staying in 113 evacuation centers in the National Capital Region.
According to state weather bureau PAGASA, Tropical Storm MARIO is 70 km northeast of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte as of 4:00 p.m. today. Also, the weather bureau said that Metro Manila, CALABARZON, MIMAROPA and the rest of Luzon will continue to experience monsoon rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides.
Classes in several areas and schools are suspended tomorrow. It is advisable to check announcements for class suspension in your areas. Also, everyone is advised to consider the weather and road conditions before deciding to travel. It might be better to stay home if the weather remains bad.
