ASIS International Philippines Chapter Holds 2014 National Convention

ASIS International Philippines Chapter held its 2014 National Convention last October 10 in Tagaytay City.

Prof. Rommel Banlaoi, Director of the Center for Intelligence and National Security Studies (CINSS) and Chairman of Philippine Institute for Peace, Violence and Terrorism Research (PIPVTR) delivered the keynote address. His presentation on Evolving Threat of Terrorism in Asia discussed the evolution of terrorism from the 9-11 attacks up to the rise of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The presentation also covered the influence and possible reach of ISIS in the Philippines. An open forum followed, wherein the issue of the West Philippine Sea dispute between China and the Philippines was discussed.

A tribute was given to the late Capt. Conrado Guerrero Dumlao, co-founder of the ASIS Philippines Chapter. Capt. Dumlao was also the former President of Truth Verifier Systems Inc., which  specializes in the field of detective and investigative services. The Dumlao family was present to receive the award.

Lamont C. Siller, legal attache from the United States Embassy in Manila talked about law enforcement operations on counter-terrorism in the US. He also emphasized the important role of private security in counter-terrorism as it is the first line of defense against terrorism.

The National Convention proved to be an informative event providing an opportunity for security professionals and managers in the Philippines to network and learn from one another. The discussions on terrorism provided an up-to-date, relevant, and critical assessment on the subject which is important to the country’s security industry.
