Four more Filipino peacekeepers from Liberia who arrived in Manila over the weekend have been brought to the Armed Forces of the Philippines Medical Center (AFPMC) in Quezon City, the military said.
The four peacekeepers arrived in the country Sunday via commercial plane. The four were given clearance to travel after passing the Ebola screening by United Nations personnel, AFP spokesperson Lt. Col. Harold Cabunoc said on Tuesday.
The four will undergo 21-day quarantine at AFPMC as directed by the Department of Health.
Meanwhile, another soldier from the first batch of peacekeepers who are kept for quarantine on Caballo Island was also taken to the AFP hospital due to chest pains.
Cabunoc said the soldier would stay at AFPMC until his condition improves and would be taken back to Caballo to finish the 21-day quarantine which will end on Dec. 3.
The first 133 peacekeepers arrived from Liberia last November 12. These peacekeepers passed the Ebola screening conducted by UN personnel prior to repatriation. They were brought to Caballo Island for three-week quarantine as a precautionary measure.
One of the peacekeepers was brought to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) in Alabang after showing symptoms of fever and diarrhea but was later diagnosed with malaria.
According to the World Health Organization, the dreaded Ebola virus has claimed over 5,000 lives in West Africa since December 2013.
Some of the symptoms of Ebola include fever, headache, diarrhea, stomach pain, muscle pain and unexplained bleeding or bruising.
