Philippines and New Zealand Strengthen Defense Ties with Visiting Forces Agreement

The Philippines and New Zealand are advancing their defense collaboration by negotiating a Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA). This agreement aims to facilitate joint military exercises and humanitarian missions between the two nations.

In April 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Prime Minister Christopher Luxon committed to finalizing the SOVFA and elevating their bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Partnership by 2026. They also agreed to sign a Mutual Logistics Support Arrangement (MLSA) by the end of 2024 to enhance defense logistics cooperation.

Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has emphasized the importance of these agreements in strengthening defense ties and addressing regional security challenges, particularly in the West Philippine Sea. He noted that such pacts would enhance interoperability, allowing the armed forces of both countries to operate within each other’s territories.

These developments reflect the Philippines’ broader strategy to bolster defense partnerships with like-minded nations, aiming to uphold a rules-based international order and promote regional stability.
