Enhancing Maritime Security: DMW Commends Red Sea Safety Measures

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has praised major shipping companies, including MSC Mediterranean Shipping Co. and CMA CGM Group, for rerouting vessels away from the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to safeguard crew members. This decision comes amid persistent security threats in the region, despite a temporary ceasefire between Israeli forces and Hamas.

The dangers of these waters were underscored by the 2023 hijacking of the M/N Galaxy Leader by Houthi rebels, which led to the 428-day captivity of 17 Filipino crew members. Additionally, attacks on ships carrying Filipino seafarers resulted in three fatalities last year.

To address these threats, the DMW issued an order in April 2024 prohibiting the deployment of Filipino seafarers on passenger and cruise ships transiting these high-risk areas. Licensed manning agencies are required to ensure vessels with Filipino crew members avoid these routes.

The DMW remains committed to working with global shipping companies and maritime organizations to strengthen security measures and protect seafarers navigating these volatile waters.
