PNP Urges Media to Ensure Accurate and Balanced Crime Reporting

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has called on media outlets and social media users to practice responsible crime reporting to prevent the spread of misinformation and unnecessary public fear.

PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil emphasized that while the country has seen a significant 26.76% decrease in crime rates since January 1, selective reporting can create a misleading perception of increased criminal activity. He pointed out that the rapid dissemination of crime-related content, especially on social media, often amplifies isolated incidents, distorting the public’s perception of national safety.

To address this issue, Marbil instructed police units nationwide to strengthen community engagement and enhance awareness of crime prevention strategies. He also urged officers to share positive developments alongside crime reports to ensure a more comprehensive perspective on public safety.

Recognizing the media’s crucial role in shaping public opinion, Marbil encouraged journalists to provide context and balance in their reporting. He underscored the need for collaboration between law enforcement and the media to align public perceptions with factual crime data, ultimately fostering greater trust and security within communities.
