Filipinos in Iraq Urged to Prioritize Safety Amid Rising Tensions in the Middle East

As tensions escalate in the Middle East following recent military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, the Philippine Embassy in Iraq has renewed its call for Filipinos in the country to prioritize their safety and security above all else.

The embassy strongly advised against all non-essential travel to Iraq, citing the heightened threat level in the region. For Filipinos already in Iraq, the message is clear: stay indoors, stay alert, and stay connected.

“The safety of every Filipino overseas is our top priority,” the embassy stated. “We urge everyone to exercise extreme caution, avoid public places, and strictly follow local and embassy advisories.”

The advisory comes in the wake of U.S. airstrikes on key nuclear sites in Iran, including facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. The fallout from these events has caused widespread concern across the region, with Iraq—sharing a land border with Iran—facing increased security risks.

Safety Guidelines for Filipinos on the Ground

Filipinos in Iraq are advised to:

  • Shelter in place as much as possible;
  • Avoid public gatherings, markets, and government buildings;
  • Remain vigilant and alert to any suspicious activity.
  • Monitor credible news sources and official announcements;
  • Prepare emergency supplies, including food, water, medicines, and power backups;
  • Maintain regular communication with loved ones and Filipino community groups.

Embassy Assistance and Emergency Contacts

To support Filipinos on the ground, the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad has activated 24/7 emergency assistance:

📞 Embassy Hotline: +964 783 700 5457
📧 Email: baghdad.pe@dfa.gov.ph

Filipinos are encouraged to report their current location to the embassy, especially if they are in high-risk areas, and to update their contact details to ensure they receive timely information.

Voluntary Repatriation Remains Active

Iraq remains under Alert Level 3—the second-highest alert status set by the Philippine government—signaling ongoing security threats and the availability of voluntary repatriation. Filipinos who wish to return to the Philippines are encouraged to coordinate directly with the embassy.

As of recent estimates, there are around 4,000 Filipinos living and working in Iraq, many of whom are in mixed families or employed in domestic and skilled labor. The embassy continues to work closely
