25 dead, 150 missing in Compostela Valley landslide

An advisory warning that flooding and landslides could occur in Eastern and Southern has been out days earlier. Still, many died and countless are missing after a landslide happened at a hilly portion in Compostela Valley.

At around 3:00 a.m. Wednesday (January 5), a landslide incident occurred at Sitio Diat 1 to Diat 700, a Gold Panning Area in Barangay Napnapan in Pantukan, Compostela Valley.

The landslide was due to the continuous rains for the past few days. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), several shanties, which are made up of light material, located towards Diat 2 Gold Panning Area, were all wiped out.

As of 8:00 a.m., January 6, twenty five bodies were recovered and retrieved while 16 persons were rescued alive. Of the 25, only nine were identified.

Sixteen persons were reported injured. They were brought to the Regional Hospital in Barangay Apokon Tagum Cty for treatment. Out of the 16, only eight were identified.

The municipal officer of Pantukan reported that more or less 150 remain missing. As of reporting time, only eight were identified.
