Long before it meant cybersecurity protocols or corporate risk management, security meant the fundamental right to self-determination.
On June 12, 1898, the Philippines made its first bold declaration of independence in Kawit, Cavite. It was a declaration born out of centuries of resistance against colonial rule. But as history reminds us, sovereignty is rarely secured overnight.
Following the 1898 proclamation, the nation had to navigate:
- The geopolitical shift of the Treaty of Paris
- The grueling years of the Philippine-American War
- The catastrophic security breakdown of WWII and foreign occupation
It wasn’t until July 4, 1946, that international recognition was finally achieved. Yet, we celebrate June 12—because as a nation, our identity is anchored on the day we claimed our freedom, not the day it was granted to us.
True security is a continuous process of vigilance, resilience, and protecting what is rightfully ours.
This Independence Day, Security Matters honors the generations of heroes who laid the groundwork for our national sovereignty. How are you helping secure the future of our nation today?
