A shooting incident has occurred again at Virginia Tech in the United States, killing a campus police officer and another person Thursday (December 8).
The incident in the same area in Blacksburg, Virginia is a grim reminder of what many considered as the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in U.S. history. In April 2007, an English major, Seung-Hui Cho, 23, killed 32 people at Virginia Tech before taking his own life.
According to the school’s website www.vt.edu, a police officer who’s also member of Virginia Tech’s own security force, was shot and killed during a routine traffic stop in a parking lot near the McComas swimming pool and athletics building.
Witnesses told the police that the shooter fled on foot and was headed toward the Cage, a parking lot near Duck Pond Drive. A second dead person was found at the said parking lot, the report added.
A weapon has been recovered at the location of the second individual. Reports of any additional shots being fired or any additional victims were unfounded.
Virginia Tech Police later identified the slain officer murdered as Deriek W. Crouse. The 31,000-student campus was earlier put under lockdown, as the suspect remained at large. The police later said there is no longer an active threat or a need to secure the school campus.
In a message, Virginia Tech President Charles Steger said once again, the campus and the community have been visited by senseless violence and tragic loss, adding that its outstanding police department has admirably served the school.
