A marine soldier was killed and five others were wounded when a civilian-military convoy was ambushed in Parang, Sulu last February 11, 2014.

Reports indicate that the convoy, escorted by troops from the Philippine Marines, was ambushed by around 30 gunmen at around 11:00 a.m. in Sitio Bakud, Brgy. Bid in Parang Town. The gunmen were identified to be members of Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG).

The firefight between the Marines and the ASG lasted for 30 minutes. The Marines managed to extricate the convoy to prevent civilians from being harmed in the crossfire. The encounter left one marine killed and five others wounded.

The convoy was carrying civilians from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources and from the Junior Chamber International who came from a tree planting activity in Parang Elementary School. No civilian was hurt during the incident.

The ambush is believed to be in retaliation by the ASG against government security forces for clearing operations last February 8. The encounter left six bandits dead in Brgy. Mabahay in Talipao, Sulu.
