‘Basyang’ Threatens Visayas and Mindanao

Tropical Storm “BASYANG” has intensified while moving toward the Southern Leyte – Surigao del Norte area as of December 31, 2014.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), as of 6:00 p.m. today, the center of tropical storm “BASYANG” is located 90km east of Surigao City, Surigao del Sur and is moving west at 33 kph.

Tropical Storm “BASYANG” has maximum sustained winds of 85 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 100 kph. Public Storm Warning Signals are raised over several areas.

  • VISAYAS: Iloilo, Negros Oriental, Negros Occidental, Siquijor, Guimaras, Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, Samar, Biliran Islands, and Camotes Island
  • MINDANAO: Camiguin, Dinagat Province, Surigao del Norte including Siargao Island, northern part of Surigao del Sur and northern part of Agusan del Norte

Public Storm Signal Number 1

  • LUZON: Masbate and Palawan including Calamian Group of Islands
  • VISAYAS: Northern Samar, Aklan, Capiz and Antique
  • MINDANAO: Misamis Oriental, Misamis Occidental, rest of Agusan del Norte, rest of Surigao del Sur, Agusan del Sur, northern part of Bukidnon, Lanao del Norte and Zamboanga del Norte

Tropical Storm “BASYANG” is expected to make landfall later in the evening over Southern Leyte – Surigao del Norte area. The storm is expected to bring heavy to moderate rains within its 400km diameter.

PAGASA warns that sea travel, especially for fishing and small sea crafts, is deemed risky in storm-affected areas.

PAGASA also warns residents living in low lying and mountainous areas under storm warning signals of flashfloods and landslides. The agency also advised residents in coastal areas under signal number 2 to be alert of possible storm surges.
