Broadcast Journalist Gunned Down in Zamboanga del Sur

A radio reporter of DXWO Power 99 FM of Times broadcasting network based in Pagadian City was shot Tuesday night.

The victim was identified as Elvis Ordaniza, 49 years old, a resident of Pitogo, Zamboanga del Sur.

Police reported that Ordaniza was shot by an unidentified gunman in his residence. The assailant  used a .45 caliber pistol.

Ordaniza suffered two gunshot wounds in his chest. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by authorities but pronounced dead while on board an ambulance.

According to the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), Ordaniza had been reporting on illegal drugs and illegal gambling in the town.

Zamboanga del Sur Police Provincial Director Senior Supt. Michael Mendoza Nicolas said an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the killing and identify the assailant.

Ordaniza is a rebel returnee. He was the first journalist killed in the country this year.
