The Davao City Council has passed a resolution temporarily suspending all permits to carry firearms from March 1 to 31.

According to the City Information Office, the suspension is implemented in view of the celebration of the 75th founding anniversary celebration of the “Araw ng Davao.”

“This is part of the security preparations to ensure that the celebration of the ‘Araw ng Davao’ will be free from firearm-related incidents and safe for the populace as well as tourists,” the resolution said.

Those only allowed to carry firearms are members of the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines and other law enforcement agencies who are performing official duties and in agency-prescribed uniform.

PNP Director General Nicanor Bartolome has ordered the Police Regional Office Davao Region (PRO 11) and the Davao City Police Office (DCPO) to implement the 31-day gun ban in the city, starting on March 1.

The PNP chief also ordered to set up more checkpoints and intensify the Oplan Bakal campaign to confiscate more illegal firearms.

Meanwhile, Mayor Sara Duterte has issued a shoot-to-kill order against gun-wielders who threaten the lives of city residents.

“Arrest and prosecute or shoot to kill if the lives of the public are in danger during apprehension,” the mayor said.
