Magnitude 5.7 Quake Hits Davao Oriental

(UPDATED) A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Davao Oriental at around 7:58 this morning.

The quake’s epicenter is located 57 km S 2°E of Mati, Davao Oriental or 1 km east northeast of Tibanbang, Davao Oriental. The quake is tectonic in origin.

According to the earthquake bulletin released by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS), the quake was felt at varying intensities in several areas:

Intensity V – Davao City; Mati Davao Oriental; Toril, Davao Del Sur
Intensity IV – Digos City; Don Marcelino & Malita, Davao Del Sur
Intensity III – Butuan City; Kidapawan City; Tagum City; Panabo City; Compostela Valley; Matanao, Davao Del Sur
Intensity II – San Francisco, Agusan Del Sur; Cotabato City; Gen. Santos City; Koronadal City; Polomolok, South Cotabato; Alabel, Sarangani

Based on accounts posted on social networks, the quake lasted for almost a minute.

The damage caused by the quake is still being determined, but no major damage is expected, according to the PHIVOLCS bulletin.

Aftershocks are to be expected, PHIVOLCS also said.
