Military sources report that Omarkhayam Maute, leader of the Maute Group and senior Abu Sayyaf leader Isnilon Hapilon, considered the top ally and point person of the Islamic State in Southeast Asia, have been killed in operations. The Armed Forces of the Philippines are yet to issue an official statement. UPDATE: Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana has issued a statement confirming the kills.
Maute and Hapilon were killed following an encounter with government forces in Padian, Marawi on the early morning of 16 October 2016. The battle also led to the rescue of some seventeen hostages, which the AFP has confirmed.
Their remains, as of press time, at the headquarters of Task Force Trident in Marawi.
