Mining stalwart keynotes Extractive Industries Security Symposium

Concerned about security in the coal, oil, and ore industries? Take your cues from the best of the fields.

Dr. Walter W. Brown, an esteemed stalwart in the mining and oil-exploration industries, will be delivering the keynote address during the Extractive Industries Security Symposium to be held on 08 March 2016 in Hotel Jen along Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City. This symposium is part of the Asset Protection Courses and Symposia presented by SecurityMatters Magazine, in partnership with Ace And Associates, Inc., in line with their shared vision of heightened security education in the country.

Coal, oil, and ore are the lifeblood of all other industries. Safety and security concerns are paramount and multifaceted, with the responsibilities of miners owed to many: stakeholders, employees, the communities surrounding their sites, and the natural resources that flourish around them. This symposium will explore the best ways to meet all those concerns, and will be framed by the institutional and procedural guidelines set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Resource persons, security and risk managers chief among them, will guide the participants in addressing the need to meet the industry’s ever-developing standards.

Keynote speaker Dr. Brown currently serves as the Chairman of A Brown Company, Inc., Palm Thermal Consolidated Holdings Corporation, Palm Concepcion Power Corporation, and A Brown Energy & Resources Dev’t, Inc.; and Director of Monte Oro Resources and Energy, Inc. He is also the President and CEO of the symposia’s omnibus sponsor Apex Mining, Inc.—a respected and responsible mining corporation engaged in the extraction of gold, as well as other precious metals and minerals like silver. Apex, which has led the industry for nearly forty years, operates a mining concession in Maco, Compostela Valley Province in Mindanao.

In the course of an illustrious career that spans decades, Dr. Brown has served in top leadership positions in numerous Philippine companies involved in mining, petroleum exploration and development, real-estate development, and manufacturing—including the Philex Mining Corporation, the Semirara Coal Corporation, and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines. In a recent profile on Dr. Brown in BusinessWorld, he pointed out that he “worked in the private sector under seven administrations: Ferdinand E. Marcos, Corazon C. Aquino, Fidel V. Ramos, Joseph Estrada, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Benigno Simeon C. Aquino III and Rodrigo R. Duterte, and wants to be remembered—he is now 78 years old—as someone who helped the country move toward economic development.”

He holds two undergraduate degrees: a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Science and and in Geology (1960), both from the University of the Philippines; a Master of Science degree in Economic Geology, and a doctorate in Geology, Major in Geochemistry, from Stanford University. He is currently a member of the Geological Society of the Philippines.

This symposium also features security professionals from notable oil, mining, and gas companies.  With resource speakers sharing real case studies, experiences, and providing practical advice on facing relevant security and safety issues within the industry. Among them: Jose Bayani Baylon, Vice President for Communications of Nickel Asia, Corp.—the Philippines’ largest producer of lateritic nickel ore, and is one of the largest in the world. Since their establishment forty years ago, Nickel Asia has expanded to four mines with more than 100 million wet metric tons of ore sold to-date. They have also made explorations in the nickel, copper, and gold industries. And, as a dynamic natural resources company, they have recently moved into the fields of renewable energy and power generation.

Mr. Augustus Caesar B. Esmeralda, the Managing Director and President of Ace And Associates, Inc., will likewise be lending his considerable experience in extractive industries security to the symposium: His premier asset-protection and security-risk management firm has both provided consultations and taken the lead on mining security operations for several high-profile companies and their projects—among them: the BenguetCorp Nickel Mines, Inc. site in Zambales, the Apex Mining site in Compostela Valley, Nickel Asia’s Isabela site, Paracale Gold Ltd.’s Camarines Norte Site, and Coral Resources Phils., Inc.’s Camarines Norte site. Mr. Esmeralda, in his own right, is backed by decades of achievements in the security sector and related fields: From his combat service in the Armed Forces, to his considerable accomplishments in the private sector, which include his being the security lead for DHL Worldwide as Country Security Manager for the Philippines; and as Regional Security Director of Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, during which he covered nine countries and 37 properties.
