CALAPAN CITY, ORIENTAL MINDORO — Three members of the Philippine Marines were following an ambush on their military convoy by suspected members of the New People’s Army. The rebels struck as the convoy was heading back to their detachment in Roxas City, Palawan on the morning of 30 September 2017.
A report from the MIMAROPA [Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan] police said that personnel of the Philippine Marines battalion landing team aboard an M35 [a medium-duty cargo truck] and an official Marine service Elf were ambushed in a forested area two kilometers away from the Marines detachment in Barangay Itabiak at 6:45am.
The troops were traveling from El Nido to their headquarters in Barangay Minara in Roxas City when they were fired upon by the NPA. Reports noted that the Marines came under heavy fire, but the government forces fired back at their attackers, forcing the rebels’ retreat.
Those wounded were: Technical Sergeant Restituto Selvino, 30; Corporal Melvin Villa, 44; and Cpl. Christian Day Rentillo, 29. They were immediately brought to Roxas District Hospital and later transferred to Puerto Princesa City for treatment.
