MANILA, Philippines—The New Bilibid Prison (NBP) is confronted by another jail controversy a month after the grenade blast.

Various reports confirmed that Ricky Cadavero, also known as “Kambal,” leader of the infamous Ozamis Robbery Group, broke out of prison on Saturday, December 8, along with three armed men disguised as legal counsels of the criminal.

Around 6:20 a.m. on said day, the armed men arrived at the Reception Diagnostic Center on the West Gate of NBP. As one of the armed men was talking to Cadavero, the other two armed companions approached and threatened the prison guards at gunpoint. Soon enough, the criminal was already on the loose with three armed men aboard their getaway vehicles – two motorcycles parked outside the NBP.

Based on a statement from the NBP management, the prison guards were said to have been caught by surprise that they weren’t able to act accordingly.

Police reports revealed that the Ozamis Robbery Group was responsible for a series of robbery and holdup incidents in Alabang Town Center, Robinsons Metro East, Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Novaliches, Robinsons Dasmariñas, and Landbank Quezon City.

Philippines National Police Director General Nicanor Bartolome called on PNP Special Forces to look for Cadavero.

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Leila de Lima has already issued an order to relieve Prison Guards 1 Ernesto Aquino and Niño Aquino assigned at the West Gate of the Reception and Diagnostic Center during the incident. Justice De Lima might also file criminal and administrative charges against the two prison guards.
