ILOILO CITY — The Philippine National Police report that, no doubt due to the massive security preparations for the festival season, the Dinagyang Festival 2017 was carried out peacefully. The Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) declared that not one major incident occurred during the 50th Dinagyang Festival highlights on 26 to 28 January 2018. Superintendent Gilbert Gorero, PRO-6 spokesman, said that crime incidents went down drastically as of early evening of 28 January.
Based on the Site Task Group (STG) Dinagyang 2018 comparative report, crime incidents in Dinagyang 2018 went down by 68 percent compared to last year. Meanwhile, Senior Superintendent Henry Biñas, Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) director, said there were 205 cases during the 6-day Dinagyang 2017 celebration.
This year, more or less 4,700 policemen, members of the law enforcement agencies, and force multipliers were deployed as part of the security preparations. The PRO-6 also adopted the major event security framework (MESF) for the festivity. The MESF is a security template employed for big events like the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meetings. Under the plan, STG Dinagyang sustained intelligence monitoring of threat groups; conducted police operations against threat groups; rendered public safety services and ensured deployment of security personnel in all places of activities; and continuous liaison and coordination with other concerned agencies.
