Police Arrest Soldier, Two Others in Leyte for Gunrunning

Police operatives arrested three suspects for gunrunning over the weekend in separate sting operations in Jaro and Palo, Leyte.

Arrested by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group were Private First Class Dennis Cardenas of the Army’s Army 19th Infantry Battalion, and civilians Roel L. Fumar and Lenelito G. Liporada.

Supt. Bowenn Joey Masauding, chief of the regional Criminal Investigation and Detection Unit said the suspects have been under surveillance for at least two weeks.

Cardenas and Fumar were nabbed on Saturday at around 10:30 a.m. in Barangay Hibucawan, in the town of Jaro while Liporada was arrested at 11:30 a.m. in Barangay Cogon, in Palo town.

Seized from the two were nine units of caliber .45 pistols with magazine assembly; the marked money used in the entrapment, three units of .38 caliber revolvers, and a .357 revolver.

According to Masauding, Cardenas posed as a middleman to the prospective gun buyers who were members of the Private Armed Groups (PAGs) in the nearby places of Leyte province.

The three will be charged for violating Republic Act 10591 or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Law.
