ILOILO CITY — Last 02 September 2017, the suspected top drug lord of Iloilo City and his son were killed in a police operation after they allegedly shot at arresting officers.
The Iloilo Provincial Police identified the deceased as Richard Prevendido and his son Jayson. Police Senior Supt. Marlon Tayaba, acting director of the provincial police, told media that the two suspects resisted arrest, opening fire as soon as the police—bearing arrest and search warrants—opened the door to their safehouse. Only the two Prevendidos were present when the operation—the result of rigorous surveillance and investigations—was conducted.
The elder Prevendido was a high-value target at the national level and stood as the number one most wanted man in Region 6. Tayaba explained that although the Prevendidos’ main territory for peddling illegal drugs covered the whole of Western Visayas, their business had connections in Metro Manila and other regions.
Crime scene investigators are still processing the area, but so far: An AK-47 and three handguns, about 10 grams of suspected shabu, weighing scales, mobile phones, and laptops—which the police believe to be used for drug transactions—were retrieved.
Tayaba called the operation a success not just for the regional police, but also for the whole of PNP. Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said in a statement, “The incident shows the enormous risk our police officers face each time warrants are implemented against high-value targets.”
