The Unguarded Stereotypes

We have seen the stereotypical portrayals of security guards in books, films, TV, and comic strips as lousy, stupid, lazy, and even criminals. The stereotype of a security guard sleeping on post wearing a dirty uniform has become an image that lasts.

It is also widely believed that the psychologically unbalanced are drawn to security work. A number of recent incidents in which current and former security guards have commited crimes have only seemed to confirm the stereotype.

Consider the folllowing:

Fire guts a heritage building in San Fernando City due to negligence of a security guard who cooked his meal in one of the rooms and left the gas stove unattended. Damage was estimated at Php1.5 million.
