In a significant operation, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) seized agricultural products worth P34.68 million in Navotas City, the BOC reported on Monday. Acting on intelligence tips, the agencies, with assistance from local police and barangay officials, inspected two cold storage units, uncovering enormous quantities of smuggled goods.
The first facility contained 132.75 tons of white onions valued at approximately P21.2 million, while the second held 89.89 tons of imported carrots worth around P13.48 million. Other items seized included tomatoes, enoki mushrooms, Chinese noodles, and Chinese kimchi. These products had entered the country without proper duties and taxes.
Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio emphasized the importance of the operation in protecting local farmers and industries from unfair competition. “This is a testament to our relentless efforts to combat smuggling and ensure compliance with our laws,” Rubio said.
Warehouse representatives had refused to accept the issued Letter of Authority (LOA), leading authorities to forcibly open the storage units. BOC agents, Navotas police, and local government officials now secure the seized items.
The warehouse owners and occupants may face charges for violations under the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act.
