The Metro Manila Council (MMC) has approved an amendatory resolution increasing the penalty for jaywalking to PhP200. Previously, violators were meted a fine of PhP150.
MMDA Chair Francis Tolentino said that jaywalking along the major thoroughfares and streets is one of the contributory factors to the traffic problems and road accidents in Metro Manila.
Tolentino also announced that the agency has embarked on an extensive re-painting and installation of new pedestrian lanes within the immediate vicinities of schools in Metro Manila.
He said at least 1,300 pedestrian lanes would be re-painted. “These pedestrian lanes will ensure the safety of the students and instill discipline among them,” he said.
Eight pedestrian lanes were already re-painted in San Juan City, eight in Manila, four in Pateros, and one each in Makati and Mandaluyong.
The project is a joint undertaking of the agency’s Metro Parkways Clearing Group (MPCG) and the Traffic Engineering Center (TEC).
Tolentino said they have been using thermoplastic materials in re-painting pedestrian lanes, which do not fade easily and reflect at nighttime.
Further, additional “Walang Tawiran Dito” signs will be placed on accident-prone areas to deter jaywalkers.
