A container van was burned by members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Barobo town in Surigao del Sur yesterday, July 15, 2013.
The said container van is owned by Allan Bernal, a contractor of Dole Philippines, Inc.. The van, filled with export-quality bananas, was traveling along Barangay Javier in Barobo when it was flagged down and eventually set on fire by the NPA rebels.
No one was reported hurt in the incident.
SecurityMatters sources report that members of the NPA are continuing extortion activities in some areas in Surigao del Sur. Notably, burning of equipment and plantations of Dole Philippines, Inc. in Barobo were pointed out to be retaliations by rebels because of failed extortion efforts against the said company.
As of posting time, security forces are conducting pursuit and clearing operations against the perpetrators.
