1 dead, 39 injured in squatter demolition

A 21-year old man was killed after violence broke out during a demolition in the Silverio Compound along Sucat Road in Paranaque City Monday (April 23).

Video footages showed Arnel Tolentino bloodied and slumped on the road after protesters started throwing stone and empty bottles and the police started firing.

An autopsy will be undertaken to determine if he died from gunshot wounds or from some other blow. A total of 39 persons were injured, fifteen of whom were PNP and 24 were civilians.

Traffic got snarled along Sucat Road for about 2 to 3 hours because of the confrontation. A demolition team from the Paranaque City government was dispatched along the vicinity of Silverio Compound to implement a demolition order on informal settlers when a group of protesters barricaded the compound to stop the authorities.

At 10 a.m. Monday, a PNP Task Force led by was dispatched to negotiate with the protesters. Despite repeated demands and warnings to remove the barricades, the protesters refused as they started throwing stones and empty bottles. Despite the resistance, the task force was able to clear the barricades at 11 a.m.
