5 Soldiers Injured in Agusan del Sur Ambush

Five army soldiers were wounded in an ambush by members of the New People’s Army (NPA) in Agusan del Sur on August 8.

Army soldiers from Peace and Development Teams of Charlie Company of the 26th Infantry Battalion were ambushed in Purok 2 of Barangay Kauswagan in Loreto, Agusan del Sur at around 7:30 in the morning. The patrol was initially hit by landmines and then engaged in a firefight by an unknown number of NPA fighters. The gun battle went on for 15 minutes before the rebels withdrew.

Five soldiers were wounded after the battle while the rebels suffered unknown number of casualties. The wounded soldiers were immediately airlifted to Camp Panacan Station Hospital in Davao City.

According to sources, the ambushed team of soldiers earlier discovered rebel supplies of food and explosives used in landmines. The teams were deployed to clear the area of rebels when a series of landmines exploded along their way.
