Fire Guts Commercial-Residential Area in Port Area, Manila

A fire engulfed a commercial-residential area lined with second-hand appliances stalls at around 11:30 a.m. today.

Various reports said the fire, which has reached third alarm, lasted for about an hour and destroyed 300,000 worth of properties.

Eight structures in the vicinity were affected, including the Philippine Red Cross warehouse that was immediately evacuated.

No fatalities were reported in the blaze, but an earlier radio report said a certain Elizabeth Villegas, a PWD (Person with Disability), has gone missing after the fire.

Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire, the Manila Fire Department said in a statement.

Meanwhile, several areas in Manila experienced a brief power interruption due to emergency line trouble caused by the fire, Meralco said in its text advisory. Power was said to have been restored by 12:43 P.m. in all affected areas.
