Filipinos Express Strong Trust in AFP, US Bolsters Military Ties

A recent survey by OCTA Research reaffirms Filipinos’ unwavering trust in the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). Nearly 86% of respondents expressed satisfaction with the AFP’s performance in December 2023, resulting in a net satisfaction rating of +84. This consistent rating since October 2023 reflects the public’s enduring confidence in the military, which should make the audience proud and supportive of the AFP.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez commended the AFP in a press release, highlighting their professionalism and dedication to national security. He lauded their service and sacrifice, particularly relevant given the Philippines’ current internal and external threats. “The men and women of the AFP deserve our sincerest gratitude,” Romualdez stated. “Their commitment to safeguarding our nation is unmatched.” He reaffirmed the House of Representatives’ unwavering support, pledging to provide resources and legislation to empower them in their duties.

AFP Chief Vows Continued Service

Reacting to the survey, AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. expressed his appreciation for the Filipino people’s trust. He acknowledged the survey as a recognition of the hard work and dedication displayed by every soldier, airman, sailor, and marine. “We stand united in our fight to protect our people and sovereignty,” declared Gen. Brawner Jr. He urged all AFP personnel to uphold their unity, professionalism, and commitment to serving the country, reinforcing the audience’s confidence in the military’s capabilities.

US and Philippines Strengthen Military Cooperation

Meanwhile, the United States Indo-Pacific Command (USINDOPACOM) pledged to enhance high-level engagements and military exercises with the AFP. This collaboration aims to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

During a meeting with Gen. Brawner Jr. at Camp Aguinaldo, USINDOPACOM commander Admiral John Aquilino discussed potential areas of collaboration. These include joint exercises like Balikatan, maritime cooperation activities, and projects under the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). The discussions also explored avenues for improved coordination with other regional allies to uphold the rules-based international order and secure a free and open Indo-Pacific. The AFP’s focus on maintaining high-level communication and implementing programs to strengthen interoperability underscores its commitment to the vital US alliance, ensuring the audience understands the significance of this cooperation.
