The Philippine Navy celebrated its 116th founding anniversary today, May 27, at the Carlito Cunanan Naval Station in Ulugan Bay in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.
During the anniversary rites held at the headquarters of the Naval Forces West facing the disputed West Philippine Sea, Navy chief Vice Admiral Jesus Millan assured President Benigno Aquino III that the navy will not waiver in its commitment to protect the country’s territory, a report on GMA News Online said.
“Makatitiyak po kayo na sa paglalayag ng inyong Navy tungo sa kanyang ika-isandaan at labim-pitong taon, ang bawat pagsubok ay gagawin naming oportunidad upang magtagumpay. At ang aming hangarin: magsilbi at managumpay sa paraang matuwad at marangal,” Millan said.
It was the first time that the Navy’s anniversary was held in Palawan. Previous years’ rites were held in Manila and Cavite.
The move was made to demonstrate the support that the naval forces have from Navy leadership and to highlight the need to develop the navy base further, various reports said.
Ulugan Bay has a strategic location that makes it easier for the Navy’s assets to reach the islands claimed by the Philippines in the Spratlys.
