Keynote Address:
Rafael Alunan III
Mr. Alunan has had extensive experience in the private and public sectors.
He currently sits on the Board of Sun Life of Canada (Philippines), and on the boards of various Sun Life subsidiaries, to include chairmanships of board committees. Mr. Alunan is also on the Boards of Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Inc. and the University of St. La Salle, and chairs some of their board committees. He serves as a member of the Board of Governors and Treasurer of the Management Association of the Philippines; an interim board member of the Harvard Kennedy Association of the Philippines; and is a regular columnist of Business World.
Previously, in the public sector, Mr. Alunan occupied Cabinet positions in the administrations of Presidents Corazon C. Aquino and Fidel V. Ramos, as Secretary of Tourism and Secretary of the Interior and Local Government, respectively. In the private sector following government service, he held key senior management and board positions in various Lopez Group companies and foundations, De La Salle University System and the Asian Institute of Management, until his retirement from corporate life last December 2011.
Mr. Alunan holds the rank of Colonel in the Armed Forces of the Philippines and is a graduate of the Philippine Army’s Command and General Staff College. He commanded the Army’s first Ready Reserve Division, the 9th Infantry Division (Ready Reserve), now the 15th IDRR and, before that, the 131st Infantry Division (Standby Reserve). In association with former President Ramos, he produced earlier this year the documentary “Tagaligtas” about the Philippine Constabulary’s Special Action Force and co-authored a companion book entitled “Silver Linings”.
He obtained his double degree in Business Administration and History-Political Science from De La Salle University; attended the Master’s in Business Administration-Senior Executive Program of Ateneo de Manila University; and obtained a Master’s degree in Public Administration, as well as a Certificate for an Executive Education program, from Harvard University, John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Mr. Alunan is happily married to Elizabeth Jalbuena-Alunan. They have been blessed with 5 children and 10 grandchildren over the past 42 years.
